Empathy matters in agency-client relations.

Here’s why…
In marketing, people talk a lot about strategy, creativity and results, but rarely about empathy. Yet, in my experience, empathy is the secret sauce that keeps everything clicking: the campaigns, the collaborations, and the people behind them.
At Ketchup, empathy is fundamental to our way of working. Whether we’re finalising a marketing strategy or fine-tuning a social post, we always remind ourselves that behind every email, every client brief, and every deadline, there’s a person. It informs all that we do.
Michelle, our Managing Director, put it perfectly:
“It’s easy to focus on deliverables and KPIs, but at the heart of every project is a relationship. If you take the time to understand what your client’s world really looks like - their pressures, their priorities, the challenges they’re juggling - you can deliver so much more value. Empathy makes collaboration so much easier.”

Partnerships are our priority
That’s exactly what we mean when we say ‘client is king (or queen)’. It’s not about bowing to every request, but about truly understanding what success looks like for them. Every client has different needs, different communication styles, and different expectations. Understanding those nuances is key work that’s worth doing.
Clients often tell us how refreshing it feels to partner with a team that gets all of that. Following our work with SaaS business Virti, its former Head of Marketing Georgi Gray said:
“Right from the get-go, it was clear Ketchup understood the brief and what we wanted to achieve. I also really appreciated how (they) worked to a tight deadline, spoke directly to our contractor, listened to our ideas, and supported our feedback… It felt like a true collaboration every step of the way.”
That kind of feedback means the world to us, because it tells us that we’ve not only delivered great results, we’ve built a deep reservoir of trust.
Ketchup Brand Manager Ellie works closely with some of our biggest clients. She succinctly summed up exactly how we do that:
“Empathy isn’t just about being nice. It’s about listening properly, reading between the lines, and adapting. Sometimes clients don’t say exactly what they need. Maybe that’s because they don’t know yet. But it could be because they’re too busy, or under lots of pressure. When you can interpret the difference, you become a partner, not just a supplier.”

Caring for Ketchup
Our empathetic approach doesn’t stop at external relationships. Internally, empathy is crucial to Ketchup. We all know agency life can get hectic: multiple clients, clashing deadlines, fast turnarounds. When things ramp up, empathy is what keeps us grounded. That means checking in on each other, picking things up where someone’s stretched, and celebrating wins as a team.
On our weekly project calls, we talk about ‘wins of the week’. But it’s also a forum to ask for or offer help if something is ‘on fire’. That’s so important: when we communicate openly, respect each other’s working styles, and share the load, it creates an environment where creativity can flourish.
Clients feel that too. When a team is in sync, it’s obvious.
An empathetic underpinning
For us, empathy isn’t a buzzword. It’s what allows us to build genuine, long-term partnerships with clients, colleagues and collaborators. It’s what transforms a marketing strategy from good to great, and what keeps relationships strong even when the unexpected happens.
At Ketchup, we don’t just focus on results, we focus on people. Because when empathy is at the heart of your agency-client relationships, the results naturally follow.
